Cantina Night

The crew at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp is thrilled to announce the Weekly Cantina Night. The Camp will be taking guests to nearby Villareal for an authentic Tico night of Imperial, Karaoke and Bocas.

Every week, WRSC guides and guests will climb into a minibus and travel 15 minutes to a popular cantina in Villareal. Karaoke will be available for the daring, but a quick warning, people here can sing. The shuttle will run between the cantina and Witch’s Rock Surf Camp as needed.

Last week Owner Joe and GM Yana joined Flash, Alex (the dude who makes everything here work) and I for the fiesta. Rafa tagged along and took some photos.

What's The Rainy Season Really Like?  By Shawna Mullen (8 years in CR and counting...)

Most people avoid September and October in Guanacaste, since those are the rainiest months of the year. If you just wanted to sit on the beach or play some golf, I might skip those months too...but for a surf vacation, these months can be great.

Rainy is relative. Sure, you could get skunked and have to surf in a downpour for a few days--but you'll already be wet, right? More often, these months are marked by clear sunny mornings followed by big thunderstorms in the afternoon, finished off by insane double rainbows and the most spectacular sunsets of the year. Some years it hardly qualifies as rainy season (last year was really mild) and some years it rains a bunch, but you still don't need a wetsuit. The air and water temps stay in the 80s. Everything is super green, flowers bloom, it's gorgeous--and the thunderstorms can be stunning too; vertical and horizontal purple lightning tearing across the sky with earth-shaking thunder. Sometimes the electrical storms continue to light up the night sky long after the rain has stopped. Nature puts any fireworks display to shame.

While the weather can be a crapshoot, the swell is consistently bigger in South Swell Season--so the surf usually rocks in the low season. And the best part is that those waves are pretty empty. Some other local businesses just close up for the rainy months, so airline tickets drop, we offer a big discount on our rates, and it gets nice and quiet everywhere. Locals love it, and we always have fun with the guests who come down that time of year. We like to schedule cheap, fun activities (like going to local Tico Cantinas for Dancing and Karaoke, Movie Nights, Card Games and Boardgames, etc.) and everyone is even more tranquillo than usual. Sounds fun right?

Green Season dates run from September 4th - October 30th. Witch's Rock Surf Camp has now started selling our weekly packages at 25% off for new guests and 30% off for our special return guests.

Book now at 888-318-7873, and you'll be down for low-season!

International Surfing Day! It Happened!

I am in recovery. I sit here, alone, in the office at Witch's Rock Surf Camp recovering.

You see, here in Tamarindo, we celebrated International Surfing Day yesterday. It was awesome! The morning started off pretty terrible with cold rain. I HATE cold rain. I left New York in part to avoid cold rain but some how it found me yesterday in the wee hours of the morning. Just as the guys from the Surfrider Foundation and I started thinking the day was going to be a wash, the Surf Gods smiled, the clouds parted and the sun came out, thus beginning a perfect beach day.

The Surfrider dudes organized informal surf contests throughout the day, starting with the kids and ending with the Masters (aka the Surfrider dudes). There was music, Maria manning the grill, cold beer and soda and the guys from maintenance found the old volleyball net. Rafa posted photos of all the surfing and beach activities yesterday.

After spending the day in the sun, it was decided it was absolutely necessary for me to represent WRSC and attend the Waterman's Ball last night. I know what you all are thinking and it is true: I have an extremely difficult job. Anyway, I got all dressed up, bid on some items at the silent auction (didn't win anything), had a few drinks (maybe more than a few) and celebrated the reasons I came to Tamarindo (the awesome surf) and the reasons I stayed in Tamarindo (the awesome people).

And that brings me to sitting here in the office recovering, listening to Camera Obscura (the band not the Nico album). It turns out that spending the day out in the sun can result in sunburn and sometimes too much party... well, you know. But hey, International Surfing Day only happens once a year.

P.S. Happy Father's Day

International Surfing Day!

Hey All,

Saturday, June 19th is International Surfing Day (think Easter, Passover or Ramadan for surfers) and we at Witch's Rock Surf Camp are super excited for the celebration.

Daytime celebrations will go from 8 am -2 pm on the beach in front of the camp. There will be a kids surf contest (entry is free and everyone gets a prize), Sand Sculpture contest and Beach BBQ.

I can't speak for the rest of Witch's Rock Surf Camp but I am most excited for the last activity on our list, the Board Swap. Bring old boards from your quiver that you want to get rid of and see what you can get in return. Maybe a new board for a great deal, maybe cash. The camp will have some old rentals in the mix and we will definitely be looking to add some new boards to the rental fleet. Other surf shops in town will be getting in on the action as well so it looks like there is going to be a great selection. Again, individuals and shops are welcome and all negotiations and exchanges are between board owners. I don't know about you, but for me this is way more fun than the traditional Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

Witch's Rock Surf Camp is also going to have some ding repair specials going on to help people who pick up new boards get them surf ready.

That's it for the daytime activities but here in Tamarindo, you can't forget about the night.

From 7 pm - Midnight, the Waterman's Ball will be held at the Tamarindo Preserve Beach Club. There will be Live Music provided by Avelino and friends and, later, DJ Lock Ice and a silent auction featuring surfboards, hotel stays, spa visits, art and much more. Food will be provided and there will be a cash bar with a portion of proceeds going to the Surfrider Foundation. Entry into this fantastic party is $10 for Expats and $5 for Ticos. Make sure you look pretty as dress is "Tamarindo Formal."

If you are unable to make it to Tamarindo to celebrate with us, please celebrate this day at your surf break. This holiday is fun but the goal is to remind people to keep our beaches clean, so go help out the Surfrider Foundation by cleaning up your beach after an epic surf session.

See you on the 19th.

What It's All About... (a Post by Yana)

Sometimes we're so focused on all the new stuff happening at Witch's Rock Surf Camp, we forget to mention the classics...like the whole reason this place was founded in the first place; taking surfers out to Witch's and Ollie's by boat to experience stunning waves in pristine nature. While these trips may have become normal for Witch's Rock Surf Camp, there's nothing standard about the classic boat trip to Witch's, and I was stoked to be able to head out there with my old friend Dave Ferrone, his friend Claudia, Mark "Bon Jovi" From Jersey (c'mon, you know you belted it out at Karaoke!), and Andres from WRSC. Here are a few snapshots, no epic action (sorry, see explanation below) but still they might give a taste of how bewitching a place Witch's Rock really is.

Claudia

Sorry I'm not a braver photographer. If I was, I would have strapped the big orange dry-case on my back and paddled into the beach through the waves with a bunch of expensive equipment that Rafa was silly enough to entrust to me. He must have figured I would punk out and just shoot from the boat, since he didn't seem too worried about all that gear ending up in Davy Jone's locker. If I had been willing to risk a couple of Nikons and a few body parts to play surf photographer, I could have gotten some great shots of Andres tearing it up, Claudia dropping into some hero waves, Mark scoring epic lefts that went forever, and David...who stayed out in the lineup well past the point where everyone else was completely exhausted, just to get a few more sweet rides.

You give love a bad name

Throughout the day, we were blessed by slightly overcast conditions and a few drops of occasional light rain--just enough to keep it glassy and limit the amount of sunscreen required. The conditions did seem to bring out the fish, and the term "teeming with life" took on a whole new meaning. The amount of sealife in the Santa Rosa National Park is just jaw-dropping, even for those used to the ocean. Flying fish, sting-rays, a five foot mahi, a sea turtle...and these were just the critters sharing the waves in the lineup. We didn't spot anything resembling the dinosaur crocs that are known to enjoy the neighborhood, but can't say the thought didn't cross our minds whenever schools of fish skittered by just a few feet away..."I wonder what's chasing those guys?...nevermind..."

David

There aren't many short boat trips in the world that transport you so quickly from relative civilization back to the Jurassic Period. The handful of pangas anchored beyond the break do little to dispel the realization that you are in Real Nature, just like it was for hundreds of millions of years before we crawled out of trees and started putting our opposable thumbs to work. Thank goodness Costa Rica has been smart enough to protect these vast areas so we can drop in occasionally.

Andres paddling back to the boat

As you can see from the shot of David all alone in the lineup, there were some good sized sets rolling through, and crowding wasn't exactly a problem! There's a lot of beach at Witch's, and after scoring an empty morning A-Frame directly in front of the Rock, a few more boats showed up, so we just moved down to another spot and had it all to ourselves until we couldn't paddle anymore. Admittedly...that moment came for me well before everyone else...but someone had to shoot a few photos right?

Our driver, Randal, loading up the boards

With Costa Rica in full green-season bloom, we soaked in the Technicolor panoramas on the boat ride back to Coco, but nobody lasted long in the van drive back to Tamarindo. Soon, we were all napping, exhausted and happy. And that's what it's all about.

Witch's Rock
